Three classroom types
When people say “unemployment,” economists often mean different stories:
| Type | Plain-English idea |
|---|---|
| Frictional | Normal job-search churn—people between roles, newly entering, or relocating |
| Structural | Mismatch—skills, industry decline, or location that take longer to clear |
| Cyclical | Soft demand in a downturn—firms need fewer workers until activity recovers |
Real labor markets mix all three. The teaching win is asking which story is someone emphasizing?—not pretending one label explains every print.
Labor force participation
The unemployment rate is usually unemployed ÷ labor force. People who stop looking may leave the labor force, which can pull the unemployment rate down even if the jobs vibe still feels soft.

U-3 vs broader measures (light)
U-3 is the headline unemployment rate most headlines quote. Broader measures (you will hear U-4, U-5, U-6) fold in groups such as discouraged workers or part-timers who want full-time work—definitions vary by statistical agency releases.
You do not need to memorize every U-code. Habit: when someone says unemployment is “really” much higher, ask which measure and check the primary BLS tables via Sources and habits.
Why the Fed watches labor (context)
